The idea of Snapchat: When, in April 2011, Spiegel floated the product idea in front of his class as a final project, the classmates focused on the impermanent aspect of the potential product, and balked at the thought of temporary photos. Murphy was eventually brought into the project to write the source code for the application, and Picaboo first launched as an iOS-only app in July 2011 from Evan Spiegel’s living room (who was still staying at home with his father when not away at school). The application was relaunched two months later under the name Snapchat.

Snapchat evolved into a mix of private messaging and public content, including brand networks, publications, and live events such as sports and music. Nevertheless, according to survey studies conducted in March 2016, the personal oriented messaging was still being accessed by users more than the publicly offered content that was being presented. 71% of users surveyed said that they preferred the app for its chat, messaging, and imaging services, versus 5% who almost exclusively chose the various events, published features, and media content on a daily basis. 24% responded that they accessed all features equally. However, about three quarters of those surveyed were also familiar with the events, media brands, and celebrity content, having a favorable opinion of those areas.

A Snapchat emoticon, etymologically a portmanteau of emotion and icon, is a metacommunicative pictorial representation of a facial expression that, in the absence of body language and prosody, serves to draw a receiver’s attention to the tenor or temper of a sender’s nominal non-verbal communication, changing and improving its usually distinguished as a 3-5 character piece — usually by means of punctuation marks (though it can include numbers and letters) — a person’s feelings or mood, though as Snapchat emoticons have become more popular, some devices have provided stylized pictures that do not use punctuation.

Originally meaning pictograph, the word emoji comes from Japanese e (絵, “picture”) + moji (文字, “character”). The apparent resemblance to the English words “emotion” and “emoticon” is just a coincidence. All emoji in body text and tables will be supplied by the default browser (and probably system) emoji font, and may appear different on devices running different operating systems. Separate pictures will appear the same for all viewers.

What is the difference between Snapchat emoticons and emojis?

– emoji are a potentially limitless set of pictorial symbols used for various purposes, including but not limited to expressing emotions, substituting for words, and so on.

– Snapchat emoticons come in two flavours: text and image. Text Snapchat emoticons are the original version. Images are a more recent version, and most text Snapchat emoticons have a pictorial version. Image Snapchat emoticons are de facto emoji. Specifically, they are the subset of emoji used for expressing emotions. Text Snapchat emoticons may thus be considered precursors of emoji, which have nonetheless developed in their own way and remain relevant.
